An Indian girl can live without every makeup item, but not a Kajal! No matter how clichéd this sounds, but no one can take away the truth from this. Kohl is the ultimate vanity essential for every girl. With tonnes of kajals available nowadays, we are spoilt for choice.
Plum, a new online-only beauty brand is selling completely chemical free products. The good thing about Plum is that they put no parabens, phalates or other controversial stuff in their products, which makes it a safe brand to experiment with! They recently sent me the Angel Eyes Kajal. Did it leave my eyes angelic? Let’s find out…
Ingredients: This has been taken from Plum website:
Jojoba oil
Pronounced “ho-ho-ba” oil, jojoba oil is a skin-compatible naturally occurring “goody” that PLUM loves. Because it resembles the natural chemistry of sebum on skin, it has excellent healing and moisturizing properties to keep your eyes shining through the day
Macadamia oil
Rich in antioxidants, including squalene, a naturally occurring antioxidant present within our skin, macadamia oil makes this formulation supremely skin-compatible.
Chamomile flower extracts
Soothing, relaxing, and calming. Now you know what Angel Eyes is all about.
Mango seed oil
Bet you never thought about oil when you saw mangoes. Some of us did, and decided to include this really exquisite source of essential fatty acids and vitamins in our kohl kajal.

Packaging: The kajal is wooden stick based, with a plastic cap on top to protect the kajal tip. It has the Plum logo on it in what else, plum color! The white kajal stick looks quite pristine 🙂 Upon reading the text on the stick, I came to know that this product has been manufactured in Czech Republic. The stick has the date of manufacturing and expiry printed on it, which I find really handy. I always love products that contain these thoughtful details.
Ease of Use: I found it quite easy to use the stick. Of course, it is not the retractable type, so sharpening becomes essential after a few uses. The kajal is quite smooth and soft on the skin and does not pull or tug at all.
Pigmentation: It gives quite a dark black color with 2 strokes. The color is quite intense.
My Experience: I have been using this kajal for a few weeks now. The best thing is the fact that it does not irritate my eyes at all. I have used it on my water-line and it never once caused redness or itching. I’m satisfied from this point as even Lakme Eyeconic had caused redness in my eyes. So I believe that it is actually free from all things harmful.
A small ouch comes from the fact that this kajal comes in a wooden stick that needs to be sharpened, which leads to some product wastage.
Staying Power: This is where my major concern lies. It does not last! When I use it early in the morning, it starts smudging heavily after 3-4 hours, so I’m left wiping my eyes with tissues 🙁 It also makes me feel quite conscious of myself as I have to keep checking myself in the mirror for panda eyes. However, I feel that since it is completely free of chemicals which make a kajal smudge-proof, it is only natural that this kajal smudges so much. And it is good to see that Plum has acknowledged the fact that this Kajal is not smudge-proof. This is what they have written in the claims:
- Rich “True Black” color with excellent coverage & long-lasting application. However, it should be noted that this is an all-natural kajal meant for inner eyelid application, and does not contain the chemical/synthetic ingredients that are essential for a fully smudge-proof or water-proof performance.
After using the Colossals and Eyeconics and Magiques, we girls have become so used to smudge-proof kajal now, that it becomes really hard to use something so smudgy. This is a complete deal-breaker. Had it contained something natural which made it smudge-proof, it would have become a staple in my make-up bag.
Price: Rs 425 (right now, the company is giving away their Posh Sharpener free with it)
FFS Rating: 3/5 (the heavy smudging and low lasting power makes me deduct points 🙁 )
Pros and Cons:
PROs:
- Completely natural and free of chemicals that may be harmful
- Contains jojoba oil, macadamia oil and chamomile, which are claimed to be good for the skin
- The stick lasts you really long (even after 3 weeks of usage, I have used a mere 2 centimeters of the stick)
- Does not irritate eyes at all: no redness or itchiness
- The color is intense black in 2 strokes (well, at least till it lasts!)
CONs:
- Extremely smudgy: I’m dealing with tissues and hankies within 3 hours of application
- After 4-5 hours, I can barely detect that I’m even wearing kajal! It completely wears off. And I’m a lazy girl who is not very fond of reapplying makeup in the middle of the day…
- Sharpening of the pencil leads to product wastage
- A bit expensive for the deal, but the quantity is more than those of retractable kajals.

Plum Posh Pencil Sharpener Review:
This is seriously awesome! Though I had hiccups with the kajal, but the sharpener is something I’m completely in LOVE with! I love the neon green cover and the contrasting purple sharpener body. This has been very very thoughtfully designed. You have space for regular 8mm pencils and Jumbo 12mm pencils. The lid on the top prevents the pencil dust from spilling. Also, you don’t have to search for a dustbin while sharpening the pencil (you can hear the lazy-lass speaking now :D) It also has this tiny plastic stick inside (called as cleaning stick) to clean up the blade and residual dust from the sharpener.
You can drop it in your bag without worrying about messing things up. Even the holes where you insert the pencil have tiny covers on them so that no dust etc enters the sharpener, and your makeup pencils remain clean. I really appreciate this thoughtful design! In all, a highly recommended tool for every girl.

Final Word:
Angel Eyes Kajal is something I would recommend only to girls who have very sensitive eyes. The completely chemical free formula is quite good for the eyes, and never irritates them. However, the heavy smudging and low-lasting power is the only deal-breaker for the otherwise good kajal. So if you are a girl whose eyes water with regular kajal, go for this one if you’re ready to bear with the smudging and reapplication.
The Posh Pencil Sharpener is a complete makeup bag essential, extremely thoughtfully designed and mess-free. A MUST HAVE!
