If Lip Balms Were Soulmates! — LUSH Honey Trap Lip Balm Review

FFS 10 Second Giveaway: Lush Honey Trap Lip Balm is a wonderfully effective lip balm with an oh-so-yummy authentic vanilla flavour and a delicious, natural sweetness. Needless to say, it is my lip balm soulmate.

There is simple, straightforward, no frills kind of love. The “I will eat only after you are here” kind of love. The silent “I’ve got you your favourite candy, you can find them by your bedside” kind of love. And then there is the mad, eat-me-all-up, drench-me-completely kind of love. The “I can’t breathe without you, imagine my life without you” kind of love. The “I can’t keep my hands off you” kind of love. Love is love. The only difference is the feeling it evokes in you. And how it inspires you.

All the talk about love was triggered by the love I feel for this product. There is no other single beauty product that I love as much as this little tin of wonder. To the point that this tin has been carried around so much that the labels are hard to read, scratchy and in states of shambles (sorry for pathetic product images, but just imagine what a remarkable product it would be to compel me to write such a review even after not being in a photogenic state!). Now hop on over to read more about my affair with this magical lip balm.

Product Description and Claims: The company website describes Lush Honey Trap Lip Balm as:

“Smooth on our delicious honey, white chocolate and vanilla lip balm and you’ll see why Honey Trap has captured the hearts of Lushies for years. A collection of deeply moisturizing ingredients like beeswax, fair trade shea butter, almond oil and organic wheatgerm oil work protect your pout while a gentle pepperminty tingle provides a subtle pick-me-up. Keep this one on hand for a serious dose of moisture or sweetness whenever you need it.”

Lush claims the product to be “lip nectar”!

Since my original tin is old and in shambles, here is an image of Lush Honey Trap Lip Balm from Lush’s website!

Ingredients and Chemistry: See below for the chemical breakdown of Lush Honey Trap Lip Balm 🙂

Fair Trade Shea Butter (Butyrospermum parkii) (Skin conditioning agent), Almond Oil (Prunus dulcis) (Skin conditioning agent), Beeswax (Cera alba) (emulsifier), Honey (Skin conditioning agent), Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil (Olea europaea) (Skin conditioning agent), Vegan White Chocolate (Cocoa Butter, Rice Syrup, Rice Starch, Rice Flour, Sugar) (Skin conditioning agent, flavouring agent), Glycerine (keeps skin hydrated), Flavor, Organic Cold Pressed Wheatgerm Oil (Triticum Vulgare) (Skin conditioning agent), Oatmeal (Avena Sativa) (skin protectant), Peppermint Oil (Mentha piperita) (flavour, skin conditioning agent) , Vanilla Absolute (Vanilla Planifolia) (flavour), Sweet Wild Orange Oil (Citrus sinensis) (flavour, skin conditioning agent), *Anise Alcohol (fragrance ingredient), *Benzyl Alcohol (fragrance ingredient, preservative),*Limonene (fragrance ingredient), *Linalool (fragrance ingredient), Alpha-Isomethyl Ionone . *Occurs naturally in essential oils

The formula of Lush Honey Trap Lip Balm is packed with skin conditioning agents and natural oils. The unique ingredients, I feel, are white chocolate and oatmeal.

Packaging: While people have concerns with tin and pot packing of lip balms, I am a sucker for these adorable packings! All Lush lip balms come in lovely, seemingly old fashioned tin pots. Lush Honey Trap Lip Balm variant comes with a pink colored label (which, you can see, has terribly faded and I have tried to color it back with some crayons..you know, in a fit of kiddish excitement that I was finally reviewing this lip balm!). I have read several reviews and people have complained that the tin pots are hard to open. However, I have faced no such issue and my tub is pretty easy to open. I have faced no issue with this packing, and I am pretty fond of this container. Also, people have apprehensions in using pot lip balms because of the hygiene factor. I am quite conscious of this too, and to overcome this problem, I, instead of dipping my fingers in the pot, kiss the contents of the tin 😛 It’s an awkward way of using a lip balm and I have seen people shooting me the “is she crazy” kind of looks when I am busy kissing my lip balm pot, but I remain oblivious and continue 🙂

Color, Scent and Flavor: The lip balm, in the pot, is deep honey-ish yellow colored (more like the color of frozen clarified butter, if you have seen that), while on the lips, it goes completely clear. Coming to the scent, it is heavenly. If I could, I would whip up a perfume for myself with the same notes and wear it every single day in the winters. It’s that good! Lush Honey Trap Lip Balm has a scent which is a mix of sweet vanilla and with a hit of chocolate, and some notes definitely coming from the orange oil that they have added. When I initially began to use it, I felt the balm sort of perfuming and spreading a beautiful aroma in my surroundings too! It is pretty strong and very pleasant. For me, it is extremely comforting too. It is the kind of scent that you can never forget once you have tasted and lived it. Apart from the unforgettable scent, it has an amazingly sweet flavour too! So, more often than not, I find myself licking it off my lips. It is delicious, and on this, I agree completely with Lush, that it does give you lips that can give “Honeyed white chocolate kisses”! If there is one romantic gift recommendation I can give to all the guys, it would be this lip balm for their girlfriends or partners. This stuff is magical!

Texture and Effectiveness: Sometimes, a product has wonderful scent and taste but turn out to be duds at doing what they are meant to do (something like Justin Biebers of lip balms, all glossy but all shitty). But this is what sets Lush Honey Trap Lip Balm apart from those all glossy products, because it really works wonders as a lip balm! First thing, you need a teeny weeny amount only, and it spreads on the lips like a dream. The texture is super buttery and feathery. It instantly drenches your lips in moisture, thus relieving any kind of chapping or dryness you may have. It does not feel at all cloying or unnatural. In fact, it settles comfortably into the skin, leaving your lips feeling protected and cushioned. Moreover, you will not need to re-apply for several hours (if you can resist licking it off!) It is wonderful as an overnight lip balm too, as I wake up with nourished and happy lips. So, all this makes it my lip balm soulmate.

The only problem I have with Lush Honey Trap Lip Balm is that in the Indian weather, I have found that the lip balm melts and the oils separate. And when it refreezes over and over, it tends to produce these tiny white granules into the lip balm, making it a little hard to use the product. To overcome this, I (in an ingenious stroke of idea), put the tin on a heated gridle, melted the whole damn thing, and allowed it to settle. This eliminated the problem of granules for a few days, but I have noticed them reappearing 🙁 Hence, this is a problem that others will encounter too.

Price: ~US$10. Which is slightly expensive. But I have used more expensive lip balms that were duds, plus I have used only about half of my container in about a year! It is super long-lasting, hence worth every penny.

FFS Rating:  10/5, it is absolutely the best lip balm that exists in the world. And this is being stated by a person who has seriously tried a lot of lip balms.

Where to Buy: Now this is the problem. You cannot buy this stuff in India. Lush shut it operations in India in 2013-14, and they have not reopened. It is available on Amazon for three or four times the original price. So, you can only get your hands on this crazily amazing product only if you have relatives or friends living abroad.

PROs and CONs:

PROs:

  1. The supremely amazing scent
  2. Highly effective at healing chapped lips and protecting normal lips too
  3. Lasts long on the lips, does not need to be applied frequently
  4. Can be used under lipsticks, as it is clear
  5. A tin lasts ages as you need very little product
  6. Cute packing

CONs:

  1. Unavailability in India. Please Lush, come back to India, we are waiting for you!
  2. The product melts in hot weather, and resetting leaves these granules in the product. However, this does not affect the efficacy or safety of the product.

Final Verdict: THE. BEST. LIP. BALM. EVER. I will be buying Lush Honey Trap Lip Balm every time that I have the opportunity. Highly recommended.
