Sally Hansen Nailgrowth Miracle Serum Review

I love wearing nail polish! Which girl doesn’t? It is so therapeutic to wear a color matching your mood on your tips and toes..If you get bored, there is always some other color waiting for you! But so many of us suffer from brittle nails. And all of us know how bad a broken nail looks, apart from being painful. Washing hands often, using sanitisers, doing household work, gardening..there are many reasons for brittle nails. I wash my hands quite often, which sometimes makes my nails very brittle, and even a slight bend ends up breaking my whole nail. Also, in winters, my nails become quite brittle due to dryness. So I bought this bottle of nail serum to help me out in those difficult times when nothing seems to make my nails stronger.

Sally Hansen is a name I always associate with nails, and almost everything I have used by this brand has been quite good, so I had a certain trust in this brand before buying this serum. Read on to know how it fared!

Ingredients and Claims:

Packaging: This comes in a beautiful gold glass bottle, which is almost the size of a nail paint bottle. It comes with a dropper that doubles as the screw lid. However, the bottle is opaque, so you can’t know how much product you’re left with.

How to Use: You have to massage each nail with a drop of this product. I use this at night before sleeping, as I personally feel that serums work best at night

Product Appearance: This is a gel sort of thing, which is not at all oily. It is absorbed in a matter of a few seconds. It does not have any fragrance.

Effectiveness: I usually use this stuff when my nails are in their most fragile state (generally after I have already experienced a nail crack). I personally use even less than a drop on each nail. After massaging, it does smooth the cuticles to some extent, but not miraculously. Of course, no other immediate effect can be seen on the nail, as it is a growth serum. It can be used either on bare nails or even while you’re wearing nail paint. Since I mostly wear nail polish all the time, I use it on top of that.

Personal Tip: If you’re experiencing broken nails, wear nail paint. The resin in the polish does help prevent breakage and cracking to some extent.

My main problem area, from where I experience cracking most of the time, is the nail corner, and always end up cutting my whole nail due to that. After using the serum for about 10 nights, I could feel my nails getting better. They actually stopped breaking. While earlier, even a minor tug or pull caused my nail to break, after using this serum, I didn’t feel so. So I feel that this serum really does what it claims! And since my nails didn’t break, I could see them growing well.

However, when I stopped using the serum, my nails became the usual brittle after a few days, so a product like this would work only as long as you use it regularly. But I feel this is fair, as every product works on a similar principle (I, being a pharmacist, can completely vouch for this fact). So if you want to prevent breakage and want your nails to remain strong, then make a product like this a part of your night time regime. I myself keep this on my bedside table and use it whenever I need.

FFS Rating: 3.7/5

Price: I got this from the US where it cost me ~$10. Most Sally serums in India are priced anywhere between Rs 450 to 900. I’m not sure of the price for this one

Where to Buy: In India, I think availability might be an issue. However, Dabur NewU keeps a good stock of Sally Hansen products, so I think it can be available there. Or Sally Hansen counters in Shoppers Stop. Otherwise, try buying it online!

Pros and Cons:

PROs:

  1. Gel based formula, absorbs super fast
  2. Really does what it claims: prevents breakage, and makes the nails grow (I’m not very sure of the 59% long claim though!)
  3. You need very little product, so a bottle lasts you really long
  4. Easy to use dropper based packing
  5. Quite pretty gold bottle! (but really very difficult to photograph! I took a ton of photos but the gold is sooo reflective!)

CONs:

  1. Effects remain only as long as you use the product. The nails may become fragile if you stop using
  2. Doesn’t do much for the cuticles, as claimed
  3. A bit expensive
  4. Not very easily available in India
  5. The bottle is opaque, so you can’t tell how much product is left

Final Word: If you are tired of your nails peeling and cracking, and nothing seems to work for you, then getting this nail serum might be a good investment, as it does work. It would make your nails strong as long as you continue using it. I recommend it to all the people who do a lot of house-work, or have to work a lot in water, as their nails are most prone to breakage.
